Self-Guided San Francisco Scavenger Hunt

Tours San Francisco
$11

Unlike other city-wide excursions, this one unshackles racers from the tyranny of official start times and concrete dates. Players simply click on a launch code, head to the starting line, and begin the scavenger hunt whenever they've got a spare two hours. During the process, players will hear fun stories and insights about historical sites while discovering hidden gems along the way.

This adventure will take you through the heart of Chicago and let you see how it has changed over time, while also having fun. This hunt has been evolving over time to be as entertaining as possible, while showing you as much as possible.

Your goal is to race against the clock to finish the hunt as quickly as possible. You will be given a series of clues. Each clue will help you find the next clue. In essence, instead of a scavenger hunt, this is a scavenger race and quest.

When you are ready to start your hunt, purchase your tickets, gather your hunting party, and head to the starting location.

Participants are not required to reserve a set time in order to begin the scavenger hunt. Once purchase is confirmed, you'll be instructed to visit local supplier website. On the day of your scheduled hunt, the website will be your guide through the city.

Private Tour to Muir Woods and Sausalito

Private Tours San Francisco
$425
Your 4-hour private SUV tour is driven and narrated by a Bay Area local owner-operator with years of professional tour experience. Private tours save time and provide a level of service not always available to bus & van passengers. Clear English is spoken. Feel free to interact with your personal guide and ask questions on route to the park. Located just 12 miles (19km) from San Francisco's city limits, Muir Woods makes a perfect quick getaway from the concrete jungle. The fog is good for more than just natural air conditioning, it helps grow really tall sequoia coastal redwoods! Muir Wood's tallest tree is 258 feet (79m) in length. The Muir grove averages in age from 500-800 years with the oldest estimated to be at least 1200 years old. Before or after the woods (schedule to be determined) you get free time in Sausalito to walk along the water, shop, dine or sip some wine.

Transportation is normally provided in an extended 2015 Ford Expedition EL XLT equipped with 4-wheel drive. This vehicle was selected for its size and 3rd row space which has 17% more leg room than other SUVs of its model year. There is trunk space for a wheelchair or stroller.

Coach buses over 35 ft are not advised on the steep, narrow, and winding road down to Muir Woods. You may request that your driver takes slow if you are sensitive to the road conditions near Mount Tamalpais. If you are thinking about driving yourself, the popularity of this park has led to some major parking congestion. They now operate on a strict parking reservation system (parking reservation included). Your private SUV tour drops you off closer to the forest entrance than the public parking lots. Since private tours don't have multiple pick up/drop off locations like some mixed group tours, you will save valuable time on your limited reservation. Don't get stuck waiting on tardy strangers.

Schedule:
Pickup is at your San Francisco hotel in either the morning or afternoon. Time will be set at least 2 days before your tour. You typically arrive at your first destination after 30-60 minutes, depending on pickup location, loading time and traffic. Some days Sausalito will be first, other days it will be Muir Woods. Due to the limited mandatory parking reservations, you must be flexible to visit Muir Woods. This is not a tour for people who must have a solid plan in advance. We will do our best to get you the most time in each destination. (Typically 60-90 min in Muir, 60 min in Sausalito).

Not included: $10 admission per person 16 years and older. This fee is not included to prevent overcharging of smaller groups under 7 people, National Park annual pass holders and families with children. This way you only pay for the entrance fees you need.

Only rangers can guide inside the park so your driver will give you instructions before you set off to explore on your own. It takes about 45 minutes round trip to Cathedral Grove where you find the oldest trees in this grove. If you want to take a longer walk, the Hillside Trail may be open depending on conditions (60-75 minutes). If you did not eat yet, The Muir Woods Cafe has coffee, tea and tries to use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.

In Sausalito, enjoy a dockside meal, taste some wine or stroll the harbor while taking in the views of San Francisco. If you want more time in Sausalito, you may end your tour there and enjoy the views from the ferry boat or take a cab back at a time of your choosing (neither included).

Private tour advantage: If you are 100% sure you will depart the tour in Sausalito and make your own way back, scenic alternatives such as the Golden Gate Bridge viewpoint & Muir Beach may be available so ferry passengers don't get shorted on time they paid for.

Private Tour to Yosemite National Park from San Francisco

Private Tours San Francisco
$1,195
Travel in the comfort of a private SUV with an expert Northern California born owner-operator. Clear English spoken. I have driven over 600 tours to Yosemite National Park over the last 10 years. Get a more personalized level of service not always available on crowded vans. Don't waste daylight picking up or dropping off other groups around San Francisco and Oakland.
Pass the California Central Valley, Sierra Foothills and Gold Country on the way to Yosemite. In the park, stops are made where you may photograph El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall & Yosemite Falls (seasonal). Free time is given near Yosemite Lodge at the Falls to explore, shop and snack. Swim in the Merced River, get in a hike or take an easy walk to the base of Yosemite Falls.
Seasonal: You may also choose to leave The Valley 90 minutes early and visit The Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoia Trees (Hike 2.5 miles/4 km).

The Vehicle:
Transportation is provided in an extended 2015 Ford Expedition EL XLT equipped with 4-wheel drive. This vehicle was selected for its size and 3rd row space which has 17% more leg room than other SUVs of its model year.

Private Tour Advantage:
Get there quicker! Yosemite offers truly amazing and memorable sights. A private tour optimizes your time. A big concern tourists face when deciding to go to Yosemite is the long drive. Being on a bus or van tour that spends the first and last hour picking up/dropping off around the city takes a good chunk of free time away from your day. Because of this, other tours are often rushed and time spent in the park is very limited. Don't spend it in a parking lot waiting on tardy strangers. Get more time for hiking, learning, swimming & photography.

Schedule:
Later departures are available on weekdays. 6-10am
13 Hour Tour:
6:30 Depart San Francisco (Message to request a later 7-9am departure. Available weekdays only)
8:30 Rest stop midway in California's Central Valley
10:30 Arrive at the Yosemite Park gates. Continue to the Valley for photo stops & free time near Yosemite Falls.
(Optional 12:30pm departure from the Valley to Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoia Trees)
14:00 Depart Yosemite Falls for one last look at El Capitan on the way out of the park.
15:00 Exit Yosemite National Park (approximate)
17:00 Rest Stop midway in California's Central Valley
19:30 Back in San Francisco
*Times are approximate and depend on weather, traffic and time spent at stops.

Its a lovely drive to Yosemite as the scenery is always evolving. After crossing the Bay Bridge, you will pass Oakland, the Altamont Pass wind farm and California's Central Valley. Farming towns and fruit stands between the orchards can break up the drive. We make our way up the Sierra Foothills into the mountains passing through a gold rush towns. Park gates are 3 1/4 hours from San Francisco on the quickest route (without delays or stops). Weather depending, you will be able to see the famous sights of the valley floor like El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall & Yosemite Falls (seasonal). Take free time near Yosemite Lodge. There you can purchase cold drinks, food & souvenirs. Walk along the Merced River taking photos of Half Dome & Yosemite Falls, take a swim in the Merced River or get some exercise by hiking a nearby trail. One of the most popular activities is walking up to the base of Yosemite Falls (may be dry late summer). Spring-Fall, you may depart The Valley early to hike the Tuolumne Grove. On the way out of the park, you might spot climbers from under the vertical face of El Capitan. A rest stop will be made at the half way point back to San Francisco.

Cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge and head out to sea, venturing 3 to 8 miles (4 to 12 km) in search of marine life. In addition to humpback and gray whales, the Bay Ares is frequented by numerous porpoises, dolphins, sharks, sea lions, and various bird populations, as explained by the onboard naturalist.

Dramatic cliffs and imposing rocky shorelines create a dramatic backdrop while you relax inside the heated cabin or watch for whales from the spacious deck. Learn local trivia and brush up on regional history about Native Americans, Spanish explorers, or Gold Rush immigrants.

Returning to Pier 39, you'll find numerous eateries where you can purchase clam chowder or the famous sourdough bread of Fisherman's Wharf.

3-for-1 Pass: Alcatraz, The San Francisco Dungeon and Madame Tussauds

Sightseeing Passes San Francisco
$120
Madame Tussauds, San Francisco Dungeon, and Alcatraz are three of San Francisco's most intriguing attractions. On this exciting combo tour, you'll have the opportunity to experience all three on the same day. Explore Madame Tussauds, a wax-figure museum where you'll see life-size sculptures of celebrities, politicians, athletes and local icons. Right next door is San Francisco Dungeon, which tells 200 years of the city's gruesome history. Then, head to Alcatraz Landing, where you'll catch the ferry to ‘The Rock' and explore the prison cells that once held America's most-wanted criminals.

Your combo tour begins at Madame Tussauds, a wax museum in San Francisco's famous Fisherman's Wharf district. But this isn't your predictable dusty wax museum. With celebrities, famous politicians, A-list athletes, it feels like you're walking through a series of performances frozen in time. Take a bow with Elton John, get up close and personal with Marilyn Monroe and explore the rest of the dozens of incredibly lifelike figures. You'll see today's hottest actors, like George Clooney, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as leaders like Barack Obama. And there's a special exhibit just on Bay Area figures and prominent San Francisco icons. Take a peek behind the scenes and see how these life-size models are created by the experts. Be sure to give yourself at least an hour to explore the museum.

Next, visit San Francisco Dungeon. This interactive theatrical experience at Fisherman's Wharf covers 200 years of San Francisco's often dark and dirty history. You may laugh, you may scream, you may end up in the clink — it's all part of the fun as live actors draw you into their fascinating tales of the Gold Rush, Alcatraz, Chinatown and more.

Allot approximately 5 to 10 minutes to walk through Fisherman's Wharf to Alcatraz Landing. The next part of your journey kicks off with a scenic, wind-whipped ride across San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island, aka ‘The Rock.' You'll have breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline as you approach your destination. In the past hundred years or so, Alcatraz has gone from military prison to maximum-security penitentiary to National Park Service site. You can tour the cells that once held America's most notorious prisoners, including Al ‘Scarface' Capone. The roughly 2.5 hour tour will give you a captivating overview of the intriguing, and scary, history of this little island on the bay. Your tour ends with your ferry ride back to Alcatraz Landing.

    Vampire Tour of San Francisco

    Ghost Tours San Francisco
    $25

The Vampire Tour of San Francisco is a walking tour of Nob Hill, conducted by Mina Harker from "Dracula." The script contains approximately 85% true San Francisco history with fun vampire lore and humor mixed in. The tour is not frightening, so it is suitable for all ages. Learn many fun and some surprising facts about San Francisco's history and how vampires played an important role in that history. The walk is very easy, with no climbing up and down hills, and is wheelchair friendly.  The tour is conducted on the first Saturday of each month, and on Halloween night.

We meet on the corner of California and Taylor Streets, across the street from Grace Cathedral, on the side of the street where Huntington Park is. The first stop is Grace Cathedral, which lasts about 20 minutes. You learn the history of Grace Cathedral, and how it came to be in its current location. There are steps and a cement wall about 3 feet high that the audience may sit on if they want to. The second stop is the Nob Hill Café, which is one block from Grace Cathedral. We are at the café for about 15 minutes, and there are chairs outside the café that may be used if no customers from the café are using them. Here you will hear a very creative story about the history of what used to be where the café is now. This is a large portion of the 15% that is not particularly true history, but is a lot of fun to listen to. The third stop is Huntington Park, which is across the street from Grace Cathedral, so again it is a one block walk. There are benches for the audience to sit on at the park. This stop lasts about 15 minutes and covers, not only the history of the park, but information about Alcatraz and the cemeteries that were removed from San Francisco a century ago. The next stop is the Pacific-Union Club, which is directly behind the park, and is about a 2 minute walk. If there is no event being held at the club when the tour is there, the audience is allowed to sit on the bottom steps of the club. This stop is about 15 minutes, and the history of the club, which includes James Flood, who was the original owner of the building, is very fascinating. Next we visit the Fairmont Hotel. This is one of the most famous hotels in the world, and one of the most haunted spots in San Francisco. The history of the hotel is very interesting, especially the ghost stories I have been told by the staff at the hotel. This is the only stop the audience goes into. The Fairmont is home to the Venetian Room, which has a wonderful secret, that I have been given permission to disclose to the audience when I bring them in. This is only allowed when the room is not being used for an event at the time we are there. We are at the Fairmont Hotel for about 15 minutes. The last stop is the Mark Hopkins Hotel, which is located across the street from the Fairmont Hotel. I tell the history of the hotel, including stories about Mark Hopkins and his wife. This takes about 15 minutes. Also covered on the tour are: The Big Four (Charles Crocker, Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, and Mark Hopkins), the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, the tunnels of San Francisco, Emperor Norton, and several other not so well known secrets of San Francisco.

Carolina Lugo's and Carolé Acuña's Ballet Flamenco

Theater, Dance, & Musicals San Francisco
    $21
Brace yourself for a sultry Spanish night when the wood floor burns with pulsating sounds of footwork, song, castanets, syncopated hand clapping and guitar for a riveting display of this true Spanish art form Flamenco. Mother & daughter duo, Carolina's y Carole's, high energy and passion defines a new dimension in Spanish dance traditions. In the heart of North Beach, Pachamama is a small colorful nightclub, full of charm, known for its tapas and great selections of wine, beer and specialty cocktails.

A Landmark Location since 1918, it housed one of San Francisco's most important speakeasies and became one of the most famous restaurants in the city. Peña Pachamama was formerly Amelio's, a famous fine dining establishment where Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe had their wedding dinner. The Kennedys were frequent guests. In the upstairs dining room Clark Gable and Carole Lombard rendezvoused.Robin Williams declared the wildly rhythmic nightspot "the kind of place even the Amish would dance." -SF Chronicle

Peña Pachamama is known for its Latin American, Bolivian and raw food tapas and other dishes, plus wine, beer and specialty cocktails for purchase.

"Flamenco star Carolé Acuña brings the soul of Spain to San Francisco" - Peter Fish, Sunset Magazine

“Lugo is a woman with complicated memories and sorrows… When she dances, she conveys depths of melancholy, devilishness or joy through the apt placement of her torso. The tilt of her ribs, for example, is just right to create that essential image of dignity, slight arrogance and emotional daring without which Flamenco is just another collection of steps and tunes. As a musician she's equally sophisticated, inhabiting the music in the middle of every beat, with a command that is neither haughty nor proud, but self-assured, at ease. She dances the way some French cook—with what appears to be a graceful inevitability discovered on the spot." ~ Ann Murphy, Dance Critic for Dance View West Magazine "It is when Lugo and her daughter Carolé Acuña dance together that the women unearth a new dimension in dance..." ~ Ann Murphy, Oakland Tribune
