San Francisco Walking Tour: Fishermans Wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge

Tours San Francisco
$50
This refreshing, easy-going walk along San Francisco's spectacular waterfront starts at the historic Hyde Street Pier (a collection of historic sailing vessels), visits the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park visitor center, then heads out along the waterfront following the sandy, crescent-shaped shore of Aquatic Park to the Marina Green, the beautiful and historic Palace of Fine Arts, and Crissy Field. On Thursdays, Fridays and Mondays, we also visit colorful Fort Point, a Civil War-era fort that sits at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge's south tower, before making a short ascent on a scenic coastal trail to the Golden Gate Bridge Overlook. The guided walk ends here but you are welcome to walk the bridge (1.7 miles each way) on your own, a spectacular bay crossing that should be on every visitors' must-do list.

Experience the natural side of San Francisco, where the city meets the sea, on our easy-going walk along the San Francisco's northern waterfront. We walk on easy coastal trails and footpaths that offer a true escape from the bustling city streets, to refreshing panoramic bay views. Our guides offer a glimpse into the rich history of the Bay and Golden Gate, a story that goes back thousands of years to the settlements of Coastal Miwok and Oholone Indians, the 16th century European exploration of the California Coast, the establishment of forts and missions in the Spanish era, and the Mexican and US eras, including the Civil War and World Wars I and II.

Our three to four-hour Fisherman's Wharf to Golden Gate Bridge walk begins with a short visit to the historic boats and vessels of the Hyde Street Pier before heading west along the shoreline bordering the yacht-filled Marina Green and the elegant lakeside grounds of the Palace of Fine Arts, a remnant of San Francisco's 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Continuing on to Crissy Field (a one-time military airfield) and its spectacular vistas of San Francisco Bay, we visit Fort Point, a Civil War-era military fort located dramatically just under the Golden Gate Bridge. We then climb up on a coastal trail to the Golden Gate Bridge Overlook for a unique view of one of the world's greatest landmarks. The formal tour ends here (public transportation available) but you have the opportunity for an on-your-own walk on the Golden Gate Bridge (2 miles round-trip). Monterey & Carmel Explorer with optional Aquarium

Multiday Tour San Francisco
$99
This tour will start traveling south on the famous Pacific Coast Highway, California Highway 1. We will set foot on Monterey's famous Cannery Row for a chance to stroll among the shops and grab a fresh seafood lunch. The tour will follow the coast through the beautiful little town of Pacific Grove on the way to the 17 Mile Drive. This famous road winds its way between magnificent homes and the spectacular coastline, between the greens and tees of world famous golf courses and among the last remaining forest of a rare species of the Monterey Cypress.

The drive finishes up at the Pebble Beach Village. Upon arrival in the enchanted town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, guests can explore the boutique shops on Ocean Avenue or be dazzled by the white sandy beach. If there is time & interest, we can visit the historic Carmel Mission. This tour also has optional short stops in Half Moon Bay or Santa Cruz.

The Monterey & Carmel Explorer Tour will take you along California's Pacific Coast on your way to historic Monterey & picturesque Carmel-by-the-Sea along with a drive through Pacific Grove in between. Monterey Bay has great geologic and biological significance: it has an incredible abundance of sea life just offshore in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, which borders 276 miles of California's spectacular coastline. Monterey Bay was the site of the first Europeans to visit the land that became California. Several waves of industrial scale whaling and fishing exploited the bounty of the huge undersea trench offshore. John Steinbeck (Grapes of Wrath) grew up in Salinas and spent much of his creative effort writing about the Monterey area. Two of his books are Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row.

You'll start the day traveling south on the famous Pacific Coast Highway, California Highway 1 (fog permitting). After an optional stop in Santa Cruz, a rest break, and optional photo stops along the way, you will set foot on Monterey's famous Cannery Row for a chance to stroll among the shops and grab a fresh seafood lunch. If you bring your own lunch, you might be able to squeeze in a short trip to the world famous Monterey Aquarium (admission not included). After lunch, you will follow the coast through the beautiful little town of Pacific Grove on the way to the 17-Mile Drive. This famous road winds its way between magnificent homes and the spectacular coastline, between the greens and tees of world famous golf courses like Spyglass Hill, and among the last remaining forest of a rare species of trees, the Monterey Cypress, which is sculpted by relentless pacific breezes into fanciful shapes. The Lone Cypress is a very poignant example of one of these hardy trees hanging on to life (with the help of human engineering) in a seemingly impossible location.

The drive finishes up at the Pebble Beach Village, where you can visit the Pro Shop and see the famous 18th Green. When you've paid that much for green fees, you don't quit at sundown on the 16th hole! Upon arrival in the enchanted town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, you can explore the boutique shops on Ocean Avenue or be dazzled by the white sandy beach. If there is time and interest, we can visit the historic Carmel Mission as a last stop. This tour also has optional short stops in Half Moon Bay or Santa Cruz. Don't forget this is a semi-private tour, meaning that the itinerary can be customized to your own interests. Come and join our Monterey & Carmel Explorer Tour now for an exquisite experience.

San Francisco Seaplane Flight and Alcatraz Tour

Air Tours San Francisco
$226
See the highlights of San Francisco on this exciting tour that combines a 6-passenger seaplane flight with a ticket to Alcatraz. Start your adventure with a 30-minute seaplane ride, a thrilling experience that takes you from the Golden Gate Bridge to downtown San Francisco and provides eagle-eye views of Angel Island, Fisherman's Wharf and more. In addition, take the ferry to Alcatraz Island for a tour of the infamous prison; tickets to Alcatraz can sell out fast, but this tour guarantees you won't miss out. Choose from two flight times, and depart for Alcatraz in the afternoon.

Seaplane tour (morning):
Your 30-minute seaplane flight departs from Sausalito, the postcard-perfect village across the bay from San Francisco. You'll take the provided shuttle from Pier 39. Choose from two morning flight times, depending on the date you select upon booking, leaving you time for the Alcatraz portion of your day.

When you arrive, meet your experienced, friendly pilot and hop inside your 6-passenger seaplane, which provides large windows and high wings so you can enjoy great views and photo ops. Take off, soaring out to the Marin Headlands and the Pacific Coast and then back across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Fly over the San Francisco Financial District, along the Embarcadero, past Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, and over to Alcatraz. Zoom across Angel Island and past the waterfront towns of Tiburon and Belvedere before splashing down to Sausalito for an exciting water landing.

Spend time shopping or eating in Sausalito, if you wish, before heading back to San Francisco by shuttle.

Alcatraz tour (afternoon):
Ferries to Alcatraz Island depart from Pier 33, which is a short walk along the Embarcadero from Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. Step aboard the ferry and enjoy the ride across San Francisco Bay, soaking up the panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and city skyline along the way.

The Alcatraz walking tour is independent and audio-guided, so when you arrive, just pick up your headset and begin your on-foot exploration of the historic prison. Cellhouse — the Alcatraz award-winning audio tour — provides fascinating narration about life inside the world's most notorious penitentiary, including stories from former inmates themselves.

Enter a real cell, see where prisoners ate and spent their time, and learn about the legendary criminals who ended up there such as Al Capone, George ‘Machine Gun' Kelly and Robert Franklin Stroud.

3-for-1 Pass: Alcatraz, The San Francisco Dungeon and Madame Tussauds

Sightseeing Passes San Francisco
$120
Madame Tussauds, San Francisco Dungeon, and Alcatraz are three of San Francisco's most intriguing attractions. On this exciting combo tour, you'll have the opportunity to experience all three on the same day. Explore Madame Tussauds, a wax-figure museum where you'll see life-size sculptures of celebrities, politicians, athletes and local icons. Right next door is San Francisco Dungeon, which tells 200 years of the city's gruesome history. Then, head to Alcatraz Landing, where you'll catch the ferry to ‘The Rock' and explore the prison cells that once held America's most-wanted criminals.

Your combo tour begins at Madame Tussauds, a wax museum in San Francisco's famous Fisherman's Wharf district. But this isn't your predictable dusty wax museum. With celebrities, famous politicians, A-list athletes, it feels like you're walking through a series of performances frozen in time. Take a bow with Elton John, get up close and personal with Marilyn Monroe and explore the rest of the dozens of incredibly lifelike figures. You'll see today's hottest actors, like George Clooney, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as leaders like Barack Obama. And there's a special exhibit just on Bay Area figures and prominent San Francisco icons. Take a peek behind the scenes and see how these life-size models are created by the experts. Be sure to give yourself at least an hour to explore the museum.

Next, visit San Francisco Dungeon. This interactive theatrical experience at Fisherman's Wharf covers 200 years of San Francisco's often dark and dirty history. You may laugh, you may scream, you may end up in the clink — it's all part of the fun as live actors draw you into their fascinating tales of the Gold Rush, Alcatraz, Chinatown and more.

Allot approximately 5 to 10 minutes to walk through Fisherman's Wharf to Alcatraz Landing. The next part of your journey kicks off with a scenic, wind-whipped ride across San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island, aka ‘The Rock.' You'll have breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline as you approach your destination. In the past hundred years or so, Alcatraz has gone from military prison to maximum-security penitentiary to National Park Service site. You can tour the cells that once held America's most notorious prisoners, including Al ‘Scarface' Capone. The roughly 2.5 hour tour will give you a captivating overview of the intriguing, and scary, history of this little island on the bay. Your tour ends with your ferry ride back to Alcatraz Landing.

    Vampire Tour of San Francisco

    Ghost Tours San Francisco
    $25

The Vampire Tour of San Francisco is a walking tour of Nob Hill, conducted by Mina Harker from "Dracula." The script contains approximately 85% true San Francisco history with fun vampire lore and humor mixed in. The tour is not frightening, so it is suitable for all ages. Learn many fun and some surprising facts about San Francisco's history and how vampires played an important role in that history. The walk is very easy, with no climbing up and down hills, and is wheelchair friendly.  The tour is conducted on the first Saturday of each month, and on Halloween night.

We meet on the corner of California and Taylor Streets, across the street from Grace Cathedral, on the side of the street where Huntington Park is. The first stop is Grace Cathedral, which lasts about 20 minutes. You learn the history of Grace Cathedral, and how it came to be in its current location. There are steps and a cement wall about 3 feet high that the audience may sit on if they want to. The second stop is the Nob Hill Café, which is one block from Grace Cathedral. We are at the café for about 15 minutes, and there are chairs outside the café that may be used if no customers from the café are using them. Here you will hear a very creative story about the history of what used to be where the café is now. This is a large portion of the 15% that is not particularly true history, but is a lot of fun to listen to. The third stop is Huntington Park, which is across the street from Grace Cathedral, so again it is a one block walk. There are benches for the audience to sit on at the park. This stop lasts about 15 minutes and covers, not only the history of the park, but information about Alcatraz and the cemeteries that were removed from San Francisco a century ago. The next stop is the Pacific-Union Club, which is directly behind the park, and is about a 2 minute walk. If there is no event being held at the club when the tour is there, the audience is allowed to sit on the bottom steps of the club. This stop is about 15 minutes, and the history of the club, which includes James Flood, who was the original owner of the building, is very fascinating. Next we visit the Fairmont Hotel. This is one of the most famous hotels in the world, and one of the most haunted spots in San Francisco. The history of the hotel is very interesting, especially the ghost stories I have been told by the staff at the hotel. This is the only stop the audience goes into. The Fairmont is home to the Venetian Room, which has a wonderful secret, that I have been given permission to disclose to the audience when I bring them in. This is only allowed when the room is not being used for an event at the time we are there. We are at the Fairmont Hotel for about 15 minutes. The last stop is the Mark Hopkins Hotel, which is located across the street from the Fairmont Hotel. I tell the history of the hotel, including stories about Mark Hopkins and his wife. This takes about 15 minutes. Also covered on the tour are: The Big Four (Charles Crocker, Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, and Mark Hopkins), the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, the tunnels of San Francisco, Emperor Norton, and several other not so well known secrets of San Francisco.

Brace yourself for a sultry Spanish night when the wood floor burns with pulsating sounds of footwork, song, castanets, syncopated hand clapping and guitar for a riveting display of this true Spanish art form Flamenco. Mother & daughter duo, Carolina's y Carole's, high energy and passion defines a new dimension in Spanish dance traditions. In the heart of North Beach, Pachamama is a small colorful nightclub, full of charm, known for its tapas and great selections of wine, beer and specialty cocktails.

A Landmark Location since 1918, it housed one of San Francisco's most important speakeasies and became one of the most famous restaurants in the city. Peña Pachamama was formerly Amelio's, a famous fine dining establishment where Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe had their wedding dinner. The Kennedys were frequent guests. In the upstairs dining room Clark Gable and Carole Lombard rendezvoused.Robin Williams declared the wildly rhythmic nightspot "the kind of place even the Amish would dance." -SF Chronicle

Peña Pachamama is known for its Latin American, Bolivian and raw food tapas and other dishes, plus wine, beer and specialty cocktails for purchase.

"Flamenco star Carolé Acuña brings the soul of Spain to San Francisco" - Peter Fish, Sunset Magazine

“Lugo is a woman with complicated memories and sorrows… When she dances, she conveys depths of melancholy, devilishness or joy through the apt placement of her torso. The tilt of her ribs, for example, is just right to create that essential image of dignity, slight arrogance and emotional daring without which Flamenco is just another collection of steps and tunes. As a musician she's equally sophisticated, inhabiting the music in the middle of every beat, with a command that is neither haughty nor proud, but self-assured, at ease. She dances the way some French cook—with what appears to be a graceful inevitability discovered on the spot." ~ Ann Murphy, Dance Critic for Dance View West Magazine "It is when Lugo and her daughter Carolé Acuña dance together that the women unearth a new dimension in dance..." ~ Ann Murphy, Oakland Tribune
