Madrid Through the Centuries Walking Tour

Tours Madrid
$103
Imagine taking a crash course on the history of Madrid, the Spanish capital and one of Europe's most vibrant cities. The “professor” is really fun and interesting. And just for good measure, your “classroom” is the actual place, not a staid room with a chalkboard. That sums up this amazing 3-hour guided walking tour through the center of the city, filled with intriguing tales of history, an insider's view that is hard to gain unless you're a resident or a historian, or a resident historian.

When we travel, one souvenir we like to bring back with us is a better knowledge of the places we visit. This 3-hour walking tour of Madrid provides that knowledge and more. Meet your guide, a scholar on city's history, architecture and culture, in Isabel II Square, a landmark that is representative of the kind of urban changes brought in by the 19th-century monarchy.

Walk through the medieval core of the city, which has remained remarkably unchanged since the period when the Habsburgs occupied the Spanish throne (1506–1700). The first stop in this area is the Puerta del Sol, the epicenter of Spain's highway network and the site of the popular uprising against the French in 1808.

Visit the Plaza Mayor, a, intimate square surrounded by ornate buildings that almost feels like an enlarged courtyard. Today the plaza is lined with quaint restaurants and bars.

The tour wraps up afterward, leaving you free to explore the center of Madrid.

Skip the line at the Prado Museum in Madrid, and see some of the most influential pieces of European artwork with your own private guide! Hear the history of the iconic building while walking around admiring masterpieces like Velazquez's ‘Las Meninas,' and learn about the different artistic movements that the museum represents.

Meet your private guide outside Madrid's Prado Museum and head straight inside with your skip-the-line entrance ticket. As Spain's national art museum, this mesmerizing gallery contains some 9,000 paintings, and that's not even mentioning its array of sculptures, prints and drawings. Knowing where to start can be daunting, so let your guide introduce you to its highlights on your 1.5-hour tour.

As you walk around admiring the artwork, hear of the museum's history from your guide. Housed in an ornate Neo-Classical complex, the architecture of the building is as grandiose as the works of art inside it. After starting out as the brainchild of King Charles III in the late 18th century, the original building soon was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of art it amassed, and so two further annexes were added to hold the growing collection.

As you walk through all the Prado's buildings, your guide will point out Spanish masterpieces like Velazquez's Las Meninas, as well as creations by the famous Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. See influential pieces of artwork by Italian supremos, like Fra Angelico's The Annunciation and Tinteretto's Christ Washing the Disciple's Feet, and learn how to spot the differences between the different artistic periods, like Renaissance and Baroque.

Your tour finishes inside the museum, and you can continue exploring independently if you wish.

Meet your guide near the Prado and head straight inside with your priority-entrance ticket. As Spain's National Art Museum, the Prado's size and complexity means a visit to it can be overwhelming, so let your guide introduce you to its highlights on your 1.5-hour tour.

Learn about the museum's history as you walk around admiring the artwork. Having started out as the idea of King Charles III in the late 18th century, the original Neo-Classical building soon outgrew itself, and so two further annexes were added to hold the ever-growing collection of art.

Explore the works in chronological order, starting with the Bosch exhibition to see masterpieces like The Garden of Earthly Delights, and then continue through to rooms devoted to Greco – a much-celebrated Spanish Renaissance painter, sculptor and architect. See his oil canvas painting The Annunciation, and then visit one of the most influential pieces of artwork in Western history – Velazquez's Las Meninas. Finish with a look at Goya's incredible The Family of Carlos IV.

Your tour finishes inside the museum, and you can continue exploring independently if you wish.

Prado Small Group Tour With Skip-the-Line Entry

Museums Madrid
$119
Join an art historian for a small group, skip the line introduction to Prado Museum and its masterpieces by such artists as Hieronymus Bosch, Titian, Rubens and Velazquez.

During this three-hour overview of the Prado Museum with an art historian guide, you will get a broad, contextual introduction to this exciting collection, arming you with the tools for a more in-depth study at a later date. Our group will be small (never more than 6 people), so we'll have plenty of time for questions as we wind our way through the galleries.

We'll begin by exploring the paintings that once formed part of the private collections of Spanish monarchs. These works form the core of the Prado's collections, and include such masterpieces as The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch and The Descent from the Cross by Roger van der Weyden, two of the most important paintings in the museum. We'll trace Spanish history through the art of the Prado, following the Habsburg dynasty in Spain, and learn how Charles V and his son Philip II became prominent patrons of Italian artists such as Titian. We'll look closely at Titian's powerful portraits of both regents, and compare and contrast the way in which he depicted father and son as we decode the political and religious components of each painting.

We will also learn about Velazquez, court painter and artistic advisor to King Philip IV (grandson of Philip II), and his influence over many of the works commissioned and acquired for the royal collection. We'll look closely at the artist's own works, particularly his famous Las Meninas. Finally, we'll finish in the Goya rooms, where we can review the relationships between artists and their royal patrons as we study such works as The Family of Charles IV, a family portrait dated circa 1800 with interesting political connotations. At the end of our introduction, you'll have a deep appreciation for the variety of masterpieces contained within the Prado.

Madrid Prado Museum Entrance Ticket

Museums Madrid
$18
The Prado National Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado) dates back almost 200 years has been described as a museum of painters not of paintings. The museum features largest holdings of Bosch, Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Velázquez and Goya, some numbering more than 100 works. This admission ticket gets you in to explore at your leisure during museum opening hours.

The Prado (Museo Nacional del Prado) and its collections of paintings, drawings, and sculpture reflect the history of Spain, whose waning role on the international stage in the 19th century reduced its appeal for foreign artists. Spanish artists now trained and worked abroad: in Rome at the beginning of the century, and from the mid-century onward in Paris, the new world capital of art. The nationalistic fervor that characterized the entire century, reflected by Spanish artists in canvases celebrating the country's peoples, landscapes and history, and the Disentailment of ecclesiastical possessions which, when they entered the Prado from the Museo de la Trinidad, significantly enriched the original holdings from the Royal Collection, are all reflected in the Museum's collections, which terminate in 1881, the year of Picasso's birth.

While primarily oriented towards painting, these collections also include outstanding examples of sculpture, the decorative arts and works on paper, from antiquity to the 19th century.

Exchange your admission voucher anytime during museum opening hours.

Alternatively upgrade to a 30-minute massage that includes an exfoliating body scrub.

In Madrid's Almudena neighborhood is a large underground cistern that was built by the Moors –Spain's medieval Arab immigrants. Right at the top of it is Hamman Al Ándalus, a luxurious Arabian baths where Madrileños have gathered for centuries to take a break from their daily lives.

Follow the local's lead by stepping inside and enjoy hours at leisure. Choose from oils scented with rose, lavender, violet or red amber, and then submit to total relaxation as your masseuse applies gentle pressure during your 15-minute massage. If you want to enjoy a longer massage with an exfoliating body scrub then why not upgrade? Book the 30-minute massage instead, and simply leave the baths a little earlier before heading to the Aroma Corner. Start with an exfoliating scrub (known as Al Ándalus Ritual) to remove dead skin cells and stimulate blood circulation, and then enjoy a longer massage.
