Guided ATV Adventure from Phoenix

Adventure Phoenix
$190

Join your Chief Adventurer on a guided ATV excursion through the majestic Sonoran Desert. Immerse yourself in the history of this forbidden frontier.  Discover the abundant flora and fauna which inhabit the Tonto National Forest. Experience the thrill of navigating through seasonal creeks, sandy washes, rocky riverbeds, and rugged desert trails. All ATVs are fully automatic.

If you're looking to ramp up the excitement, look no further than the ATV Adventure package. With this unique option, you're in control! After the standard safety rundown, you and your Chief Adventurer will hop on your fully automatic ATVs and hit the trail, winding through the diverse and beautiful landscape of the Sonoran Desert. This area features some of the most secluded off-roading trails in the Southwest, and rest assured—your Chief Adventurer knows all the best ones.

The Sonoran Desert is arguably the best-kept scenery secret in the Southwest. You'll know it when you take in the sights, gazing out over the pristine landscape and the untouched, raw beauty of the desert. Take in the bright, unique flora and exotic fauna—like the only jaguars that roam the U.S.—and appreciate the courage of the native peoples and the frontiersmen who traversed these paths years ago. The vast Tonto National Forest offers a striking contrast to this desert scene, with lush pine trees that offer shade, respite from the hottest desert in North America, and a bit of mystery.

Your guided ATV tour will offer you glimpses of this rugged beauty, all from your front row seat on the ATV. But if you think this is going to be a leisurely roll through the desert, think again—this isn't your mama's ATV ride. Your Chief Adventurer will challenge you to ford seasonal creeks, traverse sandy washes, ascend rocky slopes, and zoom along the flat desert trails. The Sonoran Desert covers more than 100,000 square miles, so there's plenty to explore. Depending on your skill level, you may cover up to 25 miles of ground, but the trail you follow has been selected because it features some of the most diverse, majestic scenery and landscape that the Sonoran Desert has to offer.

Your Chief Adventurer isn't just another pretty face: All of the guides can answer your questions about the native cultures, plants, and animals you may see while you're out.

Our workshop groups do not exceed 4 people, so you will get expert attention from a professional photographer in your learning to get the most out of your camera, learning how to compose with new life, and learning to see photographic gems you have missed before.

If you are a morning person, or an evening person, and especially if you are interested in further training your "photographer's eye", this is the workshop for you.  Bring your camera and determination to take home some gems, and we will help you fully accomplish that mission!  Our AM workshop starts one hour before sunrise; and our PM workshop starts 90 minutes before sunset

What should I expect?

The Sonoran Desert Photography Workshop is as Arizona as Arizona can get. The whole point of this is to capture the amazing beauty of the Arizona Sonoran Desert, even if it has escaped you until now. Either a phenomenal sunrise or an amazing sunset, local vegetation photographed in a way that is more beautiful than you thought possible, wildlife as it presents itself, and just heart-gripping scenery.  It is a reasonable length hike (2.5 mi) taken slow with a total elevation gain of about 300 feet (your photo opportunities change as the elevation changes), and includes many really amazing photo opportunities.

In Northern Phoenix, we have a meeting location where you can park, and we provide all transportation for our activities in the Workshop.

The Sonoran Desert Journey In Common Photography Workshop starts from our Northern Phoenix Park Parking/Meet-up Spot at around either 5:00 AM or 5:00 PM (depending on which workshop time), but it all depends on when sunrise or sunset is that day. You will be informed by email once you have completed your booking (Payment, completed waiver, and completed questionnaire).  We will provide you with bottled water and a snack, as needed.

It also contains a lot of images from the workshop which can inspire you and give you creative photo ideas.  Once on-site, we will assist each participant in seeing photo opportunities, composition, and in setting your camera controls in such a way as to best capture quality photographs. Our efforts are to assist you to become comfortable enough in finding these photo opportunities and shooting them that you will ultimately feel more confident wherever you may be.

Verde Valley Hot Air Balloon Ride

Air Tours Cottonwood
$175
Hot air balloon flights are meant to take in panoramic views and vistas of the surrounding natural beauty. That is why Verde Valley Balloons flies in the Cottonwood area, 20 miles south of Sedona, not in the Red Rocks area. To see the Red Rocks, we suggest taking a jeep tour. There's no better way to get up close and personal with the rock formations. But if you'd like to experience extraordinary views (depending upon the weather and wind direction) of Mingus mountain, the Verde River, the Prescott National Forest, Tuzigoot National Monument, Jerome, Cottonwood, or sites as far away as Sedona and even the San Francisco peaks at the base of the Colorado Plateau near Flagstaff, you will want to fly with Verde Valley Balloons in Cottonwood because you simply can't see those vistas anywhere else.

We fly most mornings at sunrise, weather permitting. Our meet time is generally about ½ hour before sunrise. We begin by meeting you at the either at the Java Love Café in Sedona or the Wal-Mart in Cottonwood, whichever is closer to you. From there we transport you to our launch site, which is about a 20 minute drive from Sedona. Once at the launch site, we will inflate the balloon and fly about 1 hr. We launch about ¼ mile away from the Verde River. If the winds are just right the Pilot may be able to maneuver the balloon over the water, possibly skimming the surface. Even though we can't guarantee it, many times there is wildlife in and along the river that you can see. Then, we typically fly above some small canyons and arroyos as we float over the Prescott National Forest. Remember a forest in the high desert is not the same as a forest in the other parts of the country. After that the Pilot always takes you as high as the winds will allow so you get to see Sedona about 15 miles off in the distance, and usually all the way up to the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff. Our Ground Team follows us and is there at the landing site, packs up the equipment and transport's you back to the meeting site for a post flight celebration consisting of a champagne toast and a light snack. (Non-alcoholic alternatives are always available as well) Each person that flew will also receive a commemorative flight certificate to celebrate their adventure. The whole duration of the adventure is about 4 hours.

Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride in Phoenix with Breakfast

Air Tours Phoenix
$136
Just north of Phoenix, enjoy a 45-minute hot air balloon ride over the Sonoran Desert. Once you arrive, watch as your balloon inflates. After your flight, relax with a champagne breakfast served on picnic tables with linens. Rides are shared with up to 20 travelers on board. This activity does take up to 4 hours.

Begin your adventure by meeting your crew just north of Phoenix about 30 minutes before sunrise for this 4-hour experience. Take a short van ride to the launch area for this scenic flight.

After you arrive, experience the inflation of the balloon by motorized fans as it grows to an enormous 11 stories tall. If the winds are favorable, you may get to go inside the balloon as it is inflated to get some amazing photos. Once the envelope is filled with air, the propane burners are ignited to heat the air inside. It takes about thirty minutes before you are ready for flight.

Join your pilot in the hand-crafted, oversized wicker basket with plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the 45-minute ride. As you takeoff, admire how light the balloon feels. During the flight, you have an unobstructed view to take excellent photographs.

Flying close to the ground, hear and see the sights and sounds of desert life. Jackrabbits, quail, roadrunners, and coyotes are commonly spotted. Your pilot will point out the exotic desert plant life below and descend to within inches of trees and cacti.

Upon landing, be greeted with flutes of champagne and breakfast. First-time riders will be treated to the legendary ceremony that balloonists all over the world have been sharing for more than two centuries. Finally, be inducted into the ballooning society and awarded the Certificate d'Ascension en Machine Aereostatique.
