Chicago Walking Tour: Art Deco Skyscrapers

Tours Chicago
$20

Discover the opulent exteriors and interiors of the Roaring '20s Jazz Deco and the classic finishes of Art Moderne buildings in this 2 hour tour. Learn of Chicago's influence on the international Art Deco movement, and trace the history of lively architectural heritage.

During the period between the two World Wars, an eclectic design style developed that later became known as Art Deco, used to refer to a mix of styles from the 1920s and 1930s. Through the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Art Deco style infused the everyday world with an elegant style of cool sophistication.

What characterizes Art Deco design most is its geometry and simplicity, often combined with vibrant colors and simple shapes that celebrate the rise of commerce and technology. From luxurious objects made from exotic materials to mass produced, streamlined items. Chicago's Jazz Age architecture was simply called Modernistic when it was created in the 1920s, and Moderne as it evolved into the Swing era of the 1930s. Whether starkly cubistic or smoothly streamlined, the new office and apartment buildings that redefined the skyline embodied the new language of building until the 1950s.

On this tour you will discover the opulent exteriors and interiors of the Roaring '20s Jazz Deco buildings and the classic finishes of Art Moderne buildings. Learn of Chicago's influence on the international Art Deco movement, and trace the history of this short-lived but lively architectural heritage. Come and experience the very essence of Art Deco!

Pullman National Monument Bus Tour

Tours Chicago
$35
Step back in time and explore with us one this exclusive bus tour one of America's truly unique enclaves. The Pullman District is located on Chicago's far south side and was a breakthrough on so many fronts including Planned Communities, Civil Rights, Unionization and so many others. Guests will arrive and tour by bus but also get to walk these historic grounds while their guide offers gripping tales of the Pullman legacy.

Pullman National Monument Bus Tour begins at 1 pm sharp from Hyatt Regency - 151 East Upper Wacker Drive - inside main lobby near concierge desk. After a brief introduction, guests embark on this one-of-a-kind exclusive bus tour in a comfortable air-controlled bus to explore the wonders of Chicago's Pullman District.

Far into the second half of the 20th century, the south side of Chicago was an industrial powerhouse. Meatpacking, luxury trains and steel production were three of the great economic engines driving what seemed at the time, the city's endless prosperity. However, like most things, the good times would not always last. As such, in the second half of the 20th century, we saw these robust industries shut down resulting in unrivaled unemployment and hardship for the 'southsiders.' As part of the demise of the Great Lakes Manufacturing states, Chicago's Southside would become a member of the Midwestern 'Rust Belt.'

While sad but true, this tour does not wallow in the collapse of these manufacturing behemoths nor attempt to assign blame for their downfall. Rather, this tour is designed to celebrate their achievements and most importantly, illuminate their indelible legacy. Come with us on a journey that not only revisits these historic venues but brings to life two of the Southside's most important endowments to America's business and socioeconomic culture.

For many, the name Pullman is synonymous with luxury train cars. While this is accurate, the Pullman legacy extends well beyond these elegant mansions on wheels. As guests will discover, Pullman became a doorway to Civil Rights, Unionization, Planned Communities and so much more.

In addition to exploring the Pullman Neighborhood, guests will also visit another 'ghost' of Chicago's manufacturing past - South Works, hand in hand with Chicago's train and rail production, steel production was a major industry and employer of the city's south side. Mistakenly, steel production was identified solely with the city of Pittsburgh. But when the Pittsburgh Plus was shut down by the government, the door opened to other markets. At its peak, Chicago's steel production employed tens of thousands and accounted for roughly 20% of U.S. steel production and South Works was the largest steel production facility in the world at one time.

This 3-hour tour will journey to the city's far south side and immerse guests into a thoughtful discussion of Chicago's inimitable past and endless contributions to the American way of life. It promises to be informative, fun and above all, entertaining.

Tours include snacks, beverages and fun trivia challenge with prizes. Restroom break is included halfway.

Roaring '20s Bus Tour in Chicago

Tours Chicago
$35

The Roaring 20's in America was unlike any other decade in our 241 year history.  It was the dawn of the “Tommy Gun, Flappers, Jazz, Radio, Talkies, Speakeasies, Gangsters, Prohibition and Women Suffrage.  And it was Chicago, like no other American city that best personified this era of prosperity in the midst of crime and corruption.  The focus of this tour is how buildings, booze and jazz made Chicago one of the most exciting and explosive places to live. As the great philosopher Al Capone often said, “Chicago put the roar in the Roaring 20's”.

Come with us back in time for 3 hours visiting some of Chicago's still standing vintage 1920's venues like the Chicago Theater, Chicago Motor Club, Wrigley & Tribune buildings, Green Mill, Biograph Theater Aragon Ballroom and so many more.

Tours begin at Hyatt Regency - 151 East Upper Wacker Drive - inside main lobby near concierge desk and after a brief introduction embark on this one-of-a-kind journey into to one of the most tumultuous eras in America's and Chicago's history.

As our bus winds through Chicago's Loop and near North Neighborhoods guests will quickly discover that 1920's Chicago was the place to be! The horizon was filled with new skyscrapers reaching for the heavens, The town was “dry” but no one went thirsty and the nighttime air was thick with laughter and the cool sound of Jazz.  During the tour guests will visit The famous Chicago Theater, Chicago Motor Club, Green Mill, Aragon Ballroom, Biograph Theater, Michigan Avenue and Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti's vault in Harry Carey's!

This tour features a discussion of Chicago's Roaring 20's beyond just Al Capone and the gangsters.  While and and his "boys" were indeed an interesting aspect of the 20's, this era was so much.  The 20's were symbolized by a building bonanza, women's rights, speakeasies and the cultural influence of Jazz, automobiles, radios and "Flappers"!  The 1920's were an age of seismic social and political change and no other city shined brighter than the “Windy City” during this tumultuous era in America!

After World War I, there was a renewed focus by the country‘s young in the pursuit of happiness and they demonstrated a willful disregard for consequences and the staid traditions of yesteryear!  Young Americans threw open their arms and embraced the vibrant and energetic expressions of Jazz offered up in the thousands of the illegal “speakeasies” that sprung up across America.   For those lucky enough to survive the war, the decade was filled with an explosion of hedonism.

For you see, Prohibition in Chicago had made having a good time “naughty” and it seemed everyone wanted in on the fun and be naughty including for the first time, women!

Chicago would start the decade like a giddy adolescent having the time of its life but it forced to grow up quickly in when 1929 when the gang wars built to a bloody crescendo and the sobering stock market crash.  The good times in Chicago had finally came to a crashing halt!

And lastly, curiously enough, despite the fact that during the decade in which Chicago was overrun by gangsters and it became a synonym for crime and corruption, the population of the city increased by nearly 700 hundred thousand!

Roaring 20s mantra; “Every morin, every evin, ain't we got fun.  Not much money, oh but honey, ain't we got fun!”

Historic Chicago Walking Bar Tour

Tours Chicago
$38
Explore downtown Chicago on a pub crawl with an educational twist! Your expert guide shares entertaining facts about the history of jazz, theater, social clubs, and the Prohibition era in the Windy City as you take in historic buildings and architecture. Use iPads to view historic photos and videos that accompany your guide's stories as you stop in both famous and hidden bars for drinks and appetizers. A short walk allows plenty of time to see Chicago's famous architecture and pubs on this tour – great for visitors and locals alike!

Meet your guide inside the Tribune Tower to begin your pub, architecture and entertainment history tour. Start in the heart of Chicago's legendary Magnificent Mile — or Mag Mile — a slice of Michigan Avenue packed with high-end shopping and landmark buildings, located between the Chicago River and Oak Street. Famous sites including the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, the Chicago Water Tower, and Allerton Hotel are found on Mag Mile.

Outside the neo-Gothic style Tribune Tower, note the bricks at the base of the building. In the early 1900s, the eccentric owner of the Chicago Tribune newspaper asked reporters to send rocks from famous buildings around the world; resulting in the display of more than 140 bricks that hail from the Taj Mahal, Westminster Abbey and World Trade Center, among other places.

Continue to the Intercontinental Hotel, where your guide explains its mixture of architectural styles. Marvel at large exterior carvings in Assyrian style; a Moorish-inspired gold dome; and learn about the mysterious motivations behind the exotic ornamentation of this skyscraper.

Visit the original Billy Goat Tavern, a legendary bar that was immortalized in a Saturday Night Live sketch, and is also known as a favorite watering hole of local newspaper reporters.Your guide illustrates the tour with video and photographs on iPads provided for the tour and shared among your group.

As you discover more historic architecture and stop into other bars, you'll learn more about jazz history, Chicago breweries, and the prohibition era's legendary mobsters such as Al Capone, part of Chicago's notorious crime syndicates. Have fun socializing and getting to know your group in a game learning about nightlife and entertainment in the neighborhood during the 1960s to win a prize!

Expect to walk at a leisurely pace, covering a half mile in about 2.5 hours, with plenty of time to stop for drinks and appetizers at three historic bars. Appetizers are included. All guests must choose a beverage for the walking tour and bring cash to cover 2.5 servings of beer ($23), wine ($29), soda ($8) or water ($3).
