Amsterdam Jewish Quarter Tickets and Tour

Tours Amsterdam
$42
Their contributions to science, philosophy and the arts left an incredible legacy.  In 1632 Benedito de Spinoza was born here, a brilliant philosopher whose thought on liberal philosophy and politics has inspired the systems of liberal democratic government of today.  In the late 17th century the Jewish community received a large influx of Ashkenazim Jews from eastern Europe.  This further developed its inimitable character.  Anne Frank, whose diary gives an amazing perspective on the suffering of the Jews during the holocaust, belonged to this community.

The suffering of the Jewish community during this period is writ large in the monuments and museums of the area.  Howevr this is not the defining aspect of this beautiful neighbourhood.  Here the dominant ethos is of survival, and success.  The Jewish community has gone from strength to strength, recovering from the terror of the war and emerging as a stronger, prouder community.  A tour of the Jewish quarter will leave you in no doubt of the indomitable will and strength of Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter.

The rich history of the Amsterdam Jewish Quarter is perfectly displayed in the many sights and venues that are unforgettable for anyone passionate about the history of the city.  The Jewish Cultural Quarter is home to some of Amsterdam's most popular and famous attractions such as:

  • Jewish Historical Museum
A trend setting museum housed in four synagogues.  The museum's large multimedia collection ranges from paintings to 3D presentations and it always offers one or two temporary exhibitions.
  • JHM Children's Museum
Set inside the Jewish Historical Museum, this clever institution provides fun ways for children to learn about Jewish history and heritage.
  • The Portuguese Synagogue
In the center of the Jewish Quarter stands the magnificent Portuguese Synagogue, built in 1675.  This spectacular building boasts a preserved 17th century interior and the Ets Haim – the oldest functioning Jewish library in the world.
  • Hollandsche Schouwburg (National Holocaust Memorial), a moving historic monument.
The Hollandsche Schouwburg theatre acted as a deportation center during the Second World War.  Thousands of people waited there, uncertain of their fate, before being deported to concentration camps.  Today the building is an unmissable memorial to those lost, and houses a memorial wall and exhibition on the Holocaust in the Netherlands.
  • Waterlooplein
a long-running, open-air flea market that was the central 19th-century market for the Jewish community.

Bus Tour to the Windmill Village Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam

Tours Amsterdam
$41

From our central meeting point, a short 20 minute bus ride will take you to the windmill village Zaanse Schans. Here you will experience all that is typical Dutch in just a few hours. Meet your guide and driver at our central meeting point. A comfortable, air-conditioned single deck bus will take you to today's destination in just 20 minutes.

The windmill village Zaanse Schans is an open air museum that houses a collection of working windmills, wooden houses, barns and shops dating back to the 18th and 19th Century. All these buildings were brought here from 1961 onward bringing back to life this most prosperous period of the Zaan region.

In its golden age the Zaan Region developed into an industrial area on a scale never seen before, with 600 active windmills: wooden factories powered by wind. In these small factories many tasks were being executed with the aid of wind energy: wood sawn by machine, grounding spices, oil for food and paint, flower, cocoa powder and many other things.

The prosperity in the 18th and 19th century can be seen in the Zaanse Schans windmill village in several ways. Alongside windmills, barns and other buildings, you will see beautiful houses that were originally built as home to rich windmill owners and merchants. These houses have attractive facades and have been painted in traditional colors such as green, beige and light blue.

At arrival in the village, your guide will take you on an orientation tour of the village. You will visit the clog museum annex wooden shoemaker shop and in the cheese farm you will get to taste Dutch farmer cheese. Then it is time to further explore the village on your own. Before you set off to discover the Zaanse Schans on your own, your guide will give you further information on the Zaanse Schans and its unique character, teach you local history and culture, and give you insider's tips about what to do and where to go.

      Dalí: Genius
Dalí grew up in the small town of Figueres in the Spanish region of Catalonia. He came from a good family; his parents encouraged his artistic ambitions and he studied at the Madrid Academy of Art. His studies saw the beginning of his eccentric lifestyle. In the 1920s, he went to Paris and came into contact with artists such as Picasso, Magritte and Miró. This led to his first phase in surrealism.

Dalí's work began to explore three themes: The universe and human sensation, sexual symbolism, and pictography. Even before this period, Dalí was an enthusiastic reader and fan of the theories of neurologist Sigmund Freud. The psychic, surreal and hallucinatory creatures and spaces which originated from within were in stark contrast to his classical painting technique which was influenced by the Renaissance artists.

After meeting the love of his life, his muse Gala in 1929, they achieved the kind of star status as a couple that we are now familiar with today. His unbridled ambition and his decision to become a genius took him to unprecedented heights. As he said himself: “When I was six years old, I wanted to be a cook. When I was seven, I wanted to be Napoleon. Since then, my ambition has continued to grow at the same pace.” After World War II, he moved with his wife to the United States where his classic period of artworks began. He became fascinated by religion and the scientific discoveries of his time.

This piece has not been on display since 2009. A very important canvas that characterizes Banksy as an activist artist. Banksy is well known for his outdoor art. You can find his pieces of street art all around the world. In London you can even buy maps marking the locations where you can find these pieces of art, which are mostly protected. Rijksmuseum Small-Group Tour with Art Historian

      Tours Amsterdam
      $106
This is a 2.5-hour small-group tour of the Rijksmuseum with advance tickets to skip the line. The group size is kept at 6 people maximum and led by a trained art historian to create an immersive experience. You will be provided a nuanced overview of this stunning art collection tailored to the curious traveler, and provide historical context to works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh.

During the 17th century, as trade and exploration bloomed and the Netherlands became a world power, art became a prominent part of culture. More than 2 million artworks were produced in Holland as investment pieces alone, and the masters among the artists became a critical part of the art historical lexicon.

During this 2.5-hour walking tour in the newly re-opened Rijksmuseum, survey the major artworks of the Dutch Golden Age, including Rembrandt and Vermeer, as well as discovering many less-well-known artists of that period and later, in order to gain a view of Dutch life through the lens of its great portrayers. This is a small-group tour which allows for a hands-on, conversational experience with your guide, who is a trained art historian.

The Rijksmuseum is one of the world's great museums, which has recently gone through a nearly decade-long renovation. Look at the work of this renovation and how it returned the museum to its 19th century roots, and what that means for the artwork. One of the hallmarks of the Rijksmuseum is a central room dedicated to Rembrandt's masterwork, the Night Watch, a painting crucial to any discussion of the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century. Though crowded, you will certainly visit this room to discuss this work and contextualize it within the social and political history of its period.

Depending on your guide and the interests of the group, your course may go in any number of directions. View and discuss more work by Rembrandt as well as encounter other such other Dutch masters of the 17th century as Vermeer, Steen, and Ruisdael. But, also take time to step away from the crowds in these popular galleries to look at some less-well-known artists and look at how they portrayed Dutch life and were collected at the time.

The Rijksmuseum also boasts a fantastic collection of furniture and other objects that will help paint a portrait of the era. Your time will not be spent only considering the 17th century, the Golden Age of Holland, but, also traverse the 19th and early 20th centuries and look at how Dutch influence in the world changed and life at home evolved. Van Gogh will, of course, make an appearance, as will many other artists who date from the period of the museum itself, making a nice circular connection to the start of your experience. The exact course of your walk through the collections will differ from day to day, but will always be tailored to the interests of the group, and shaped by the scholarly background of your guide.

You will emerge from your time with a deeper understanding and enhanced appreciation of Dutch history and art.

Total Amsterdam Relax Tour: Pancakes, Souvenirs and a Boat Cruise

      Tours Amsterdam
      $196
Eat, shop and float your way through Amsterdam and discover the city's most famous foodie export, meet local artisans and buy one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Finish off your day by exploring the famous canals on a highly entertaining boat cruise. This tour covers all your Amsterdam must-dos in one handy day package, so what are you waiting for?!

This Total Amsterdam tour is a combination of two of our most popular tours in the city, Home Cooked Amsterdam and Made in Amsterdam plus a very special boat cruise!

Your host will be waiting for you at their home along the Amstel river, excited to show you how to make one of the country's most famous dishes — Dutch pancakes.

We'll pop to the local grocery store in Rembrandt Square to pick up our ingredients and learn more about local foods. Then we'll head back home for a lesson in the art of pancake making and you'll find out why the humble pancake is so beloved by Dutch people.

After your lunch, you'll take a short and scenic walk to Dam Square to meet your shopping guide at the entrance of the New Church. If you prefer, you can also take a one-stop tram ride as well, if you have a prepaid city pass its just as easy. Please note, this portion of the tour will be self-guided.

Once you've met up with your guide, he or she will explain that you have three vouchers included in the tour price which you can use to make purchases in three different shops downtown. Each shop has a variety of cool, locally-made products available, that cost approximately 15-20 euros. If there is any extra money left over, it will be donated to our chosen charity.

We have carefully chosen these stores because of their responsible business approach; from environmental sustainability to reintegrated employment schemes, these shops offer you truly unique souvenirs to take home that boast serious social care credentials. Your choices include an object made of local materials, a memorable professional photograph and a hand designed t-shirt.

After all that shopping, we'll sort you out with an authentic local sweet treat which is similar to ice-cream to give you a much-needed energy boost!

The guided portion of your tour ends at the world-famous Anne Frank House and from here, you will be responsible for catching the boat for your cruise, which can be taken at your own leisure, so if you fancy doing something else first, that's totally up to you.

Your guide can escort you to the canal cruise if you wish to do it straight after shopping (we'll show you the departure point during our tour) or you can make your way there at a time that's convenient for you.

Your mode of transport is not your average tour boat, it's a small and funky affair run by a Dutch Youth Yachting Club. They love to tell interesting stories about the city as you cruise the canals and, best of all, they provide an open bar of beer, wine and soft drinks to assist your good time! Groups are small too (less than 35 passengers), so you're guaranteed a personal and intimate experience.

Before you head out on the boat, don't forget to ask your local guide for more tips on what else to see, do and eat during your stay in Amsterdam.

Faces of Amsterdam Small-Group Walking Tour

      Tours Amsterdam
      $75
This small group tour is around 3.5 hours and shines a light on immigration by examining Amsterdam's proud history of welcoming settlers from all over the world. Delve into the city's history and meet first and second generation migrants who have benefited from this place. You will also get to visit a local foundation that is helping refugee artists in Amsterdam to tell their stories on their own terms.

Amsterdam is an amazing city, brimming with quirkiness and creativity, and bursting with stories to tell. On this tour, we're telling the story of multiculturalism in the Netherlands, both historically and in present day, via the experiences of diverse Amsterdammers. Not only will you walk away from your day with an in-depth understanding of local culture (and multiculturalism) here in Amsterdam, but you'll also discover some hidden highlights and learn about the unique work being done by a local arts organization. Your tour will begin in front of the Tropen Museum, a poignant place to start our tour given that we'll be focusing on the cultural melting pot that is Amsterdam, and this space celebrates the people of the world and the wide-ranging cultures they have created.

We'll make our way through the peace and quiet of Oosterpark and discuss why Amsterdam has always been such a popular choice of location in which for migrants to settle. The park is scattered with sculptures, several of which will directly relate to our conversation. ‘The Shout,' for example, is a memorial to filmmaker Theo van Gogh and serves as a symbol of the importance of freedom of speech in the city.

We will arrive at a popular local shopping street and head straight for the local market. On the way, you'll get to try some Turkish desserts, a neighborhood must-have treat (and it's on us!). We will then spend time exploring some of the most exciting and diverse shops in the area and meeting the vendors themselves, including a grocer from Iraq and an elaborate haberdasher from Morocco. At the market, ask your guide to point out where you can find the kibbeling stand. These Dutch snacks consist of battered chunks of deep-fried fish, served with garlic mayonnaise or tartar sauce. Next up, we walk through the trendy Indische Buurt neighborhood, before taking the tram toward our next stop. As we ride, we'll listen to some genuine tales from past and present migrants to the city, courtesy of our complimentary iPods.

To finish your Amsterdam tour, we will take a very special and exclusive behind-the-scenes look at a local foundation, Ondertussen, that provides studio space for both refugee and non-refugee artists, to promote cross-cultural engagement. The organization's mission is to not only help bring artistic freedom to refugees, but to also include the refugee experience in the contemporary Dutch arts scene, and to encourage and embolden the cultural conversation in Amsterdam.

You will have the chance to hear personal stories from the artists themselves, who are using this historic space to produce and exhibit their art, helping them to make a life for themselves here in Amsterdam. The tour ends here but if you want to continue your immersion into Dutch multiculturalism, the new Holocaust museum is next door (entrance fees at your own cost). Alternatively, ask your in-the-know guide for tips on where to explore next.

Made In Amsterdam: A Super Local Souvenir Tour

      Tours Amsterdam
      $150
Don't buy another pair of clog slippers! Uncover more authentic Amsterdam souvenirs on this shopping tour that takes you to a t-shirt shop, a portrait studio and a store selling artistic pieces from recycled materials. You'll have a spending allowance of EUR 55 included in the tour price, and if you don't spend it all, it won't be wasted – anything saved from your bank will go to help cancer and diabetes research.

Discover the city centre of Amsterdam on a shopping tour that will show you three uniquely local shops that are worth your browsing time! You won't just hunt for locally produced goods, you'll get to speak directly with the shop owners and learn the stories behind their unique, fun and responsible products. Every stop on this two-hour Amsterdam tour offers a historical connection, a responsible focus, and authentic local inspiration.
You'll also be given a voucher for each shop so that you can bring home a souvenir from each place, on us! The vouchers range between EUR 15 and 25 each, giving you a total of EUR 55 to spend on whatever catches your eye. You might pick up a locally produced craft item, a portrait photograph, or maybe a handmade t-shirt. Note that Urban Adventures receives no commission off any sales made on this tour, so you can be sure all the money from your vouchers is going back to local, independent artists. Don't want to spend it all? You can also put your vouchers to a good cause, as any remaining money not spent with your vouchers will be donated to Amsterdam Locals, a company that supports diabetes and cancer research.
The first shop we visit will be in the Red Light District, a neighbourhood under transformation and with hundreds of years of history as a commercial hub. Today, the district is a shopping gem, and we'll walk through the tiny streets and meet a few entrepreneurs who have decided to invest in this colourful area. We'll make our way to a local store that produces items made from waste — their main material being salvaged and recycled bicycle parts. This shop is run in partnership with a social reinsertion project set up by the Dutch government for refugees and prisoners, and the owners work with various institutions to sell goods created by disadvantaged locals. These artists are paid per piece, and the program is a stepping stone to help them rebuild their lives in the local community.
We will then cross the Dam Square to meet our second shop owner, for a novelty gift with historic flair. Located behind the New Church in the heart of the city, we'll find a portrait photography studio that has been named one of the top tourist attractions by local newspaper poll — but it's definitely not a tourist trap! Many of the local shops in the area have photos of themselves, dressed in costumes, taken at this portrait studio.
Finally, we'll finish things off in the Jordaan area, meeting our last merchant. We'll visit a small company that sells responsibly made and locally designed/printed t-shirts. The shirts are from organic materials, and the shop operates on a small, local scale, thereby avoiding the constraints that come with being a bigger manufacturing company.

Your tour will end here, but before you go, feel free to ask your guide for any other tips on where to shop, eat, drink and discover local life while you're in Amsterdam.

      Tours Amsterdam
      $42
Discover the Jewish history in Amsterdam as you visit important landmarks in the city on this 2-hour walking tour. This tour will show and explain the history of the large Jewish population in Amsterdam and the footprints they have made in the city.

Your morning or afternoon in Amsterdam will start at the statue of the dockworker at the foot of the Portuguese synagogue. Set off in a relaxing pace to make sure you really get to see, feel and learn all about the Jewish history and population from Amsterdam. The first Jewish inhabitants arrived in Amsterdam in the 16th century. From the start they established themselves in the area around the Jodenbreestraat.

In the course of World War II this area was made into a ghetto by the Germans. They raised a big fence around the area and many bridges remained open permanently, so the inhabitants could only enter and leave the area at certain points. During many raids the inhabitants were taken away.

After the war, this once vibrant and lively area had turned into a sad, abandoned, and neglected area. Your guide will take you back to the times of the rise of the Jewish people in Amsterdam and the sad period of 1940-1945.

This 3-hour trip is shared with a maximum of 45 guests.

Begin your tour at the central meeting point at the foot of the A'DAM Lookout just across the water from Central Station in Amsterdam at 12pm. A comfortable, air-conditioned single-deck bus will take you to today's destination in just 20 minutes.

The windmill village of Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum that houses a collection of working windmills, wooden houses, barns, and shops dating back to the 18th and 19th century. All of these buildings were brought here from 1961 onward bringing back to life this most prosperous period of the Zaan region.

In its golden age the Zaan Region developed into an industrial area on a scale never seen before with 600 active windmills: wooden factories powered by wind. In these small factories many tasks were being executed with the aid of wind energy: wood sawn by machine, grounding spices, oil for food and paint, flower, cocoa powder, and many other things.

The prosperity in the 18th and 19th century can be seen in the Zaanse Schans Windmill Village in several ways. Alongside windmills, barns, and other buildings, you will see beautiful houses that were originally built as homes to rich windmill owners and merchants. These houses have attractive facades and have been painted in traditional colors such as green, beige, and light blue.
