Considered a rare delicacy, it was typically served in European Royal courts.  Today, Amsterdam is the main global port for cocoa!  Since the nineteenth century chocolate became increasingly cheaper, and as a result wildly popular.  But we all know that already – after all, who doesn't love chocolate?

Jewish Cultural Quarter Self-Guided Tour

Museums Amsterdam
$18
Beautiful synagogues, striking buildings and impressive monuments colour the streets of Amsterdam's Jewish Cultural Quarter. Stroll through this historic area and visit the Jewish Historical Museum, a leading Dutch cultural institution with an engaging Children's Museum, the remarkable Portuguese Synagogue, the moving National Holocaust Memorial (Hollandsche Schouwburg) and National Holocaust Museum. Five cultural institutions accessible with a single ticket.

Discover the Jewish Cultural Quarter in the heart of Amsterdam.
Stunning synagogues, striking buildings and impressive memorials grace the streets of Amsterdam's old Jewish quarter. In the heart of the neighbourhood, an area of less than one square kilometre, is the Jewish Cultural Quarter, which includes the Jewish Historical Museum with the engaging JHM Children's Museum, the stately Portuguese Synagogue, the National Holocaust Memorial and the National Holocaust Museum. Here visitors can find out all about Jewish culture, history and traditions – all with just one ticket.

Portuguese Synagogue
In the centre of the Jewish Cultural Quarter stands the magnificent Portuguese Synagogue. The building is still used as a house of worship, but it is also open to the public, and concerts are held there regularly. The 17th-century interior is still fully intact and illuminated by hundreds of candles. The other buildings in the complex include treasure chambers where visitors can admire a unique collection of ceremonial objects made of silver, gold, silk and brocade.

Jewish Historical Museum

Any trip to Amsterdam should include a visit to the Jewish Historical Museum. This museum, housed in four monumental synagogues, offers a unique look at Jewish life in the Netherlands past and present in all its complexity. The museum has a large multimedia collection ranging from paintings to films and from everyday objects to 3D presentations and always offers one or two temporary exhibitions.

JHM Children's Museum
Inside the Jewish Historical Museum is another museum, just for children! It is set up as a Jewish family home with six rooms, where children aged 6 to 12 can play games that will teach them about Jewish culture – sometimes seriously and sometimes with humour. Children can bake rolls in the kosher kitchen, learn Hebrew in the study or make music together in the music room.

National Holocaust Memorial
During the Second World War, the occupying forces made Jews assemble in this former theatre. Tens of thousands of people were held here, not knowing what fate awaited them, until they were deported to concentration and extermination camps. The Hollandsche Schouwburg is now a memorial site with a wall of names commemorating the Jewish victims. It also holds an exhibition about the Holocaust in the Netherlands.

National Holocaust Museum
Through this former teacher training school hundreds of Jewish children, who were held captive in the crèche next door, were smuggled to relatively safe places with the help of the resistance during the Second World War. At this historic site, in the National Holocaust Museum, the story of the Holocaust is told in changing exhibitions and events in an artistic form and based on personal accounts.

Thirty colossal, 17th century group portraits from the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum collections have been brought together for the first time ever in the Hermitage Amsterdam. These 'brothers and sisters' of the Night Watch are unique all over the world and are rarely exhibited due to their size.

They show us regents, civic guards and merchants of all ranks, social classes and religions, standing together as brothers. Rembrandt's 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deijman' and portraits of Civic Guards including Govert Flinck and Nicolaes Pickenoy are but a few examples of the works of art that will be available to view in the Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age. Furthermore, a number of group portraits of Dutch administrative culture by the contemporary Dutch photographer Taco Anema provides a link to the present day.

Together they illustrate the story of collective citizenship that is typical of the Netherlands. It's as if they are holding up a mirror to contemporary Dutch society. Because the relationships between the people of the time formed the basis of the standards and conventions of today.

Admission Ticket to Museum Willet-Holthuysen in Amsterdam

Museums Amsterdam
$12
Visit Museum Willet-Holthuysen and experience what it was like to live in a high-class canal house in Amsterdam. The Willet-Holthuysen Museum is located in a 17th century double canal house at Herengracht number 605.

In 1895 Mrs. Willet left her opulent house including impressive art collections of her deceased husband Abraham, consisting of antique furniture, silver, ceramics, sculptures, paintings and photographs to the city of Amsterdam. Museum Willet-Holthuysen houses the extraordinary art and craft collection from Abraham Willet (1825-1888). A selection of this collection is displayed on the first floor of Museum Willet-Holthuysen. On this floor other exhibitions that are in line with the collection are also displayed.

Abraham Willet was the son of a famous Amsterdam doctor. At a young age Abraham developed great interest in art and antiques. He was already active as a collector even before his marriage to the wealthy Louisa Holthuysen in 1861. He mainly bought paintings of contemporary artists but sold this collection before he moved to the canal house at Herengracht 605.

It was at the Herengracht where Abraham Willet became a passionate collector again with a broad interest in almost every field of arts and crafts. His collection included ceramics, glassware, silver, furniture, expensive trinkets, paintings, prints, drawings and photographs. He also collected statues and had put up a library at the canal house.

Regardless of the time of year, the waters sweep in at an astonishing rate; at low tide the Mont can be surrounded by bare sand for miles around, but at high tide, barely six hours later, the whole bay is often entirely submerged by the sea.
