Historic Tennessee - Southern Plantations and Presidents

    Tours Nashville
    $69
See the South's deep history first-hand on this historic tour of Tennessee, departing from Nashville by charter bus. On this guided experience, you'll explore Southern plantations and presidential estates as well as learn about prominent Nashville and Civil War history. Hear Nashville's storied past on a guided tour of the Belle Meade Plantation and Andrew Jackson's manor, The Hermitage. History buffs won't want to miss this.

Your 6.5-hour Tennessee history tour begins with a comfortable charter bus ride to the stately manor of Andrew Jackson, The Hermitage. Home of the seventh U.S. president, historians consider President Jackson's Hermitage the best preserved early presidential home. Explore its quarters just as President Jackson and his staff did back in 1836.

Stroll the lovely formal gardens, then visit the slave quarters, the estate's original 1804 cabin and the sight where this president and his wife were laid to rest. Afterward, lunch is on your own accord at the on-site historic Hermitage Smorgasbord, offering a traditional Southern Buffet, including dessert. From there, continue on your chartered bus ride to the Belle Meade Mansion.

Known as the Queen of the Tennessee Plantations, the Belle Meade Plantation was the centerpiece of a 5,200-acre estate, world-renowned as a thoroughbred stud farm and nursery in the 19th century. It's a prime example of Southern Greek Revival Antebellum architecture. The present 30-acre site features 10 outbuildings which include an 1832 slave cabin and a colossal carriage house and stables.

The day comes to a leisurely close with a wine tasting session at the Winery at Belle Meade Plantation in the afternoon. Sip the estate's wines, such as chardonnay and cabernet, while enjoying views of the vineyards, then board the bus to return to Nashville.

    Nashville Distillery Tour

    Booze Tour Nashville
    $99
Tennessee Whiskey Tours gives you a generous pour of history, tradition, and ingenuity, from the rolling hills of Tennessee to the banks of the Cumberland. Whether you're a native or just passing through, our tours are the best way to spend a day with family, friends, or complete strangers. We'll give you a ride – all you gotta' do is get your butt in a seat.

As one of the first states to pass a prohibition law, Tennessee's distilleries in the hills and hollers basically owned the market from 1838 until 1933, when the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution was finally passed and ratified. Pa risked his life to buy it and Ma snuck it in her coffee (for medicinal purposes, of course). After more than 80 years of Post-Prohibition freedom, heck, some of these counties are still dry - join us for a journey back in time and sample the finest old and new batch recipes in the nation.

    Itinerary:
Departure at 11am from Downtown Nashville at 250 5th Ave South near Bob's Steakhouse

Return at 5pm. The destinations on our Secret Sauce Tour are, well, secret just like many of the bootlegging operations dotting the rolling hills of rural Tennessee during our overly oppressive prohibition. It lasted about 15 years than federal prohibition. Your tour visits and tastes at three distilleries. We rotate distilleries, some favorites include:

Nelson's Green Brier Distillery: A family run distillery reopened after being dormant for nearly 100 years. The Nelson brothers are on a mission to bring back the bustling whiskey business that was once bigger than Jack Daniel's.

Corsair Distillery: The most innovative distillery in town, Corsair won Whiskey Advocate's 19th Annual Artisan Whiskey of the Year Award with their Triple Smoke. Ever tasted Quinoa Whiskey? It a thing.

H Clark Distillery: One of Tennessee's newest distilleries, this quaint operation 30 minutes south of Nashville is the first legal operation in Williamson County in a century.

Prichard's Distillery: Tennessee Rum? Yep, it's a thing. And a darn good one. Mr. Prichard makes rums, whiskies (both the Tennessee Whisky and Bourbon), shines, and liqueurs among other things. They've been legally distilling since 1997.

Short Mountain: It's rumored that this Woodbury farm's cave spring was once used to supply Capone's moonshine inventory.

Nashville Craft Distillery: One of the newest kids on the block. This distillery takes a very scientific approach to their tours. It's owner and distiller is a former DNA science guy.

Depending on the size of the group, you will either be traveling via coach bus or 15 passenger van.  Bring your spending money and ID.

Admission to Lotz House Civil War Museum

    Museums Nashville
    $10
Visit the historic Lotz House to hear the story of the remarkable family that built the 19th-century home that now functions as a Civil War museum. Explore displays to learn about the Civil War battle that took place on the property; the property still bears the battle scars to prove it. The home also features an extensive collection of antique furniture, fine arts, and superb carpentry. Your expert guide shares fascinating commentary about the house as you delve into history, just outside Nashville.

Travel about 30 minutes from Nashville to Franklin, where your admission to the Lotz House Civil War Museum includes a 30–60 minute walking tour that takes you through the historic house. Built in 1858 by a German immigrant named Johann Albert Lotz, the house showcases the master carpenter's craftsmanship and eye for design. Your expert guide points out Mr Lotz's fine wood carving on three fireplace mantles, among other examples.

Note the scars from a fierce Civil War battle that took place just outside the Lotz House in 1864. During the fighting, the Lotz family took refuge in the basement of the Carter House, located across the street. When they emerged, thousands of soldiers lay dead outside. The family decided to turn their home into a hospital for the wounded.

Fortunately, the Lotz House features happier tales too. Along with Mr Lotz's work, you can admire collections of fine arts and antiques throughout the house, including furniture crafted in the 1800s by artisans John Henry Belter and Prudent Mallard. Antique porcelain dishes from Paris are on display, as well as a rare collection of taxidermy birds, captured and mounted by the famed ornithologist John James Audubon.

Learn about the remarkable career of the Lotz's daughter Matilda. After financial setbacks post war, the family moved to California where Matilda studied design and won top honors. She continued to work in Paris, eventually becoming a painter with commissions from royal families throughout Europe — a rare opportunity for a woman of her time. Today, she is celebrated as one of California's leading early female artists. Your guide shares her story and a painting of hers that hangs in the Lotz House.

With beautiful antiques, civil war history and a fascinating family story, the Lotz House offers a great opportunity to step back in time.
