Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Walking Tour

Tours Berlin
$20
Head north of Berlin for a tour into the past at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, one of the main concentration camps in Nazi Germany. While you explore the memorial site with a guide, you'll learn the history of the camp and those imprisoned here, providing an essential background to Germany's past and present.

While the Nazis were hosting the 1936 Olympic games, slave laborers were being forced to build a huge concentration camp just north of Berlin, intended to hold political 'enemies' of the Nazi regime political, racial and 'asocial'. Of the 200,000 people interned, more than 50,000 lost their lives before the camp was liberated by the Soviets in 1945.

The camp was then used by the Soviets until 1950 to detain former Nazis, German soldiers and political opponents of the communists. Many thousands more died from malnutrition and disease.

The key to this walking tour is the informative and illuminating narrative provided by your expert tour guide. During your 3-hour visit to the camp, you'll learn important background history of the site as you walk through the Appellplatz parade ground, the Jewish Barrack, punishment cells, execution grounds and crematorium, Station Z, the Pathology Laboratory and camp hospital.

This tour was researched by historian Gabriel Fawcett, who is publishing an important witness account of the camp. All tour guides have their own special insights into the history of Sachsenhausen, and are experienced in unraveling the complex history of the Third Reich and the Holocaust.

Discover Berlin Half-Day Walking Tour

Tours Berlin
$17
Uncover Berlin's past and present on this enlightening 4-hour walking tour through Mitte, the city's historic center. Walk along the Berlin Wall, stroll down Unter den Linden to Brandenburg Gate, see the Reichstag and Holocaust Memorial, hear the story behind Checkpoint Charlie and learn about the Topography of Terror museum. Listen as your guide ties important monuments, buildings and memorials to the city's complex Prussian, Imperial, Nazi and Cold War past, weaving history into a detailed narrative. Compare these historical sights with modern marvels such as Potsdamer Platz and Friedrichstrasse.

Start your 4-hour walking tour in either East Berlin or West Berlin. Your guide will begin with an overview of how Berlin was founded, and will continue explaining the long, complex and fascinating history of Germany's capital city throughout your tour.
Stroll down the Unter den Linden boulevard, linking the Stadtschloss royal palace to Pariser Platz and Brandenburg Gate. As Berlin grew and expanded to the west, Unter den Linden became the grandest and best-known street in the city by the 19th century.
Visit Museum Island, the Neue Wache memorial and the Berlin State Library, where Albert Einstein once worked, and walk under the triumphal arc of Brandenburg Gate, the monumental entry to Unter den Linden. Nearby you'll see the Reichstag parliament building, Pariser Platz, Hitler's bunker and the poignant Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial.
Follow the 'death strip' to Checkpoint Charlie, and stand in the square of Bebelplatz, the site of the infamous 1933 Nazi book burnings. Walk along the remains of the Berlin Wall, which once divided East and West Berlin, and learn of the momentous events leading to its collapse in 1989.
Pause outside the Topography of Terror museum, located on the site of the former Gestapo and SS headquarters. Your guide will explain how the museum's intentioned location reflects Berlin's efforts at confronting and grappling with its past. Look down into the excavated cellars, where political prisoners were tortured and executed.
On a lighter note, get a taste of modern Berlin at Potsdamer Platz, with its urban architectural spread, and see how the area of Friedrichstrasse is being reinvented as Berlin's luxury shopping street. Private 3-Hour Historical Tour of East Berlin City

Private Tours Berlin
$390
This 3-hour private guided tour explores the surviving monuments of the East German regime including the infamous Berlin Wall and Stasi headquarters. Your private guide will reveal the dialogue between modern Berlin’s built environment and its dark and often hidden history. You’ll hear about life under Communist rule, the East Germans’ growing discontent and their government’s brutal suppression.

The tour begins at the Brandenburg Gate where, in June 1987, President Ronald Reagan famously called on Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev to, “tear down this wall!” Nearby is the former Soviet Embassy, a grandiose monument built in 1945 amid the rubble of World War II as a bold declaration of Stalin’s ambition to control all of Berlin. We will discuss how the Allies’ postwar division of Germany into four parts led to decades of Cold War tensions.

Next stop is the Friedrichstrasse train station, a key crossing point between East and West Berlin. When families were torn apart by East Germany’s ironfisted immigration laws, they said their sad goodbyes here in the office known as the Palace of Tears. At Nordbahnhof, we’ll explore how Berlin’s division created “ghost” stations, unused but heavily guarded stops on West Berlin’s subway lines that lay in East German territory. Farther along, the Berlin Wall memorial allows you to experience the notorious Death Strip and hear stories of East Berliners whose attempts to escape led to their tragic deaths.

We visit the grandiose milelong housing complex known as Karl Marx Allee and consider how East Germans’ dreams for a Socialist paradise turned into a nightmare of deprivation, suppression and paranoia. East Germany’s secret police, the notorious Stasi, coerced neighbors and family members to spy on each other by. At the former Stasi headquarters, you’ll learn how its feared leader Eric Mielke recruited a massive network of spies and created innovative surveillance techniques.

Finally, we will visit the center of public life in East Berlin, Alexanderplatz, which was rebuilt in the 1960s with monuments like the futuristic parliament building and the iconic TV Tower. In 1989, this symbol of East German pride was the setting for massive demonstrations that led to the regime’s downfall and brought 40 years of Communist rule to an end.

Private Half-Day Tour of Berlin: Capital of Culture, Tyranny and Tolerance

Private Tours Berlin
$390
Embark on a 3-hour history tour with a scholar guide, that considers the 300-year evolution of Berlin from Prussia’s cultural capital, to the bustling 19th Century seat of Germany’s Emperors. Explore the dark epicenter of the Nazi and Cold War eras to its present revival as a world capital of culture, the arts and of tolerance.

This 3-hour tour of Germany’s capital city takes a broad view of the political and ideological forces that unleashed genocide and global war in the 20th century. Exploring Berlin’s iconic landmarks while emphasizing the tumultuous Nazi and Cold War eras, you will learn how in the 1700s tiny Prussia’s violent transformation into Europe’s dominant military power already set the stage for the great tragedies of recent history.

Begin the tour at Potsdamer Platz, the business center which replaced the wasteland formerly known as East Germany’s “Death Strip.” Following the path where the Berlin Wall once stood through to the historic Tiergarten Park, you take in the dramatic new Holocaust Memorial and the Reichstag. While the mysterious fire that damaged the Reichstag in 1933 was used by the Nazis as the pretext to suspend civil liberties and arrest political opponents, the grand glass dome created for the building in 1992 by architect Norman Foster (complete with walkways that look down into the Parliament), provokes a discussion about the symbolic intentions of the cupola a metaphor for Germany’s reunification, transparency and commitment to democracy.

Reaching back further into Berlin’s past, we follow the footsteps of Napoleon through the Brandenburg Gate, discussing the impact of the French revolution as a catalyst for German nationalism. Traversing the Unter den Linden, Berlin’s royal boulevard lined with palaces, museums and theaters, you pause at the famous equestrian statue of Frederick the Great, for a discussion of Prussia’s “Poet King” and his role in shaping the militaristic and cultural orientations of the future German Empire. At Bebelplatz, site of the 1933 Nazi book burning, you’ll learn about Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and its terrible consequences. As you cross Museum Island (Berlin’s answer to the Louvre), we will discuss the city’s 19th century development into a cultural center.

Next, Hackesher Markt, a charming pocket of prewar Berlin, affords you a chance to ramble through a network of hidden courtyards. From here, Alexanderplatz offers a striking counterpoint; once a historic square, the East Germans rebuilt it as in the 1960s as a communist block showplace complete with futuristic government buildings, apartment blocks and the iconic TV Tower. We’ll confront the longest surviving segment of the Berlin Wall at the East Side Gallery and learn of its 40-year history. Finishing at Checkpoint Charlie, the legendary crossing point from West Berlin to East, where in 1989, thousands of East-Germans poured across the border bringing the Cold War to an end, we conclude by discussing the East/West divisions that continue to impact Berlin even as the city evolves new sensibilities and directions.

We explain the history of the hall and show a lot of historical pictures.

Now we go on with the culinary tasting at different stops.

To gain back strength after the tour, we start with a freshly made juice.

We continue to a Turkish delicacies specialist and can taste delicious pastes.
Afterwards we enjoy raw ham from a small manufacture and wonderful cheese from the north of Germany.

Just right next to this is the French booth, where we will have delicious quiches.

To top everything off, we will have an espresso.

Dresden Day Trip from Berlin

Multiday Tour Berlin
$66
Explore the city of Dresden, one of the cultural centers of Germany, on a day trip from Berlin. Take a guided walking tour of Dresden and hear interesting stories about the city's vibrant history from your expert guide. Discover the city's main sights, including the Semperoper (Semper Opera), the Zwinger palace and the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady). After the guided portion of your tour, the afternoon is yours to explore Dresden at your leisure. Stroll through the baroque city, explore the many green parks, or relax by the riverbanks of the Elbe, overlooking the skyline of Dresden.

After meeting your guide in central Berlin, sit back and relax aboard an air-conditioned coach during your 2-hour journey to Dresden. When you arrive in Dresden, also known as the 'Jewel Box' because of its rococo and baroque city center, your guide will show you the city on a walking tour.

Learn about Dresden's history and how it served as a cultural capital between 1806 and 1918 under reign of the Saxon Kings. As you walk around, learn about the tragic end of World War 2 and hear about the controversial bombing in February 1945, during which the whole city center was destroyed. After the city's reconstruction and since the reunification of Germany in 1990, Dresden has regained importance as one of the country's cultural centers, now featuring 56 galleries, 44 museums and 36 theaters, including the former royal treasure collection, the 'Green Vault.'

See the neo-Renaissance Semperoper opera house, in which the world-famous composer Richard Wagner held some of his premiers. Next to the opera house is the Zwinger palace, one of the most delightful baroque constructions in Germany. Once a palace for parties and celebrations for the royals, it now houses museums including the Old Masters Picture Gallery featuring among others Raphael's Sistine Madonna and a porcelain museum. Admire the impressive and newly rebuilt Frauenkirche, completely destroyed in 1945, which served as a war memorial in the German Democratic Republic and was not rebuilt until 2005.

By midday, you'll have time at your leisure to explore this interesting city. To get a feel for it like a true local, have lunch (own expense) at one of the many kneipen (pubs) in Weisse Gasse, a pedestrianized area in the old town. Later, you can visit the sights you saw on your walking tour from the outside in more detail, stroll along the beautiful river Elbe, visit Dresden's many parks, or enjoy a cold beer in a Biergarten (beer garden) overlooking the baroque skyline.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Tour from Berlin

Multiday Tour Berlin
$20
Tour Sachsenhausen, one of the first concentration camps established by the Third Reich, on a full-day trip from Berlin. An expert historian guide provides important facts about the prison cells, laboratories, and gas chambers that you see at Sachsenhausen, which today serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died there.

Meet your host in either the east or west of the city — the choice is yours — and then travel together by train (own expense). Your destination is the town of Oranienburg (just less than an hour away) to visit Sachsenhausen, one of the first Nazi concentration camps constructed in 1936. When you arrive, an expert guide leads you inside the campgrounds, where you will learn about the camp's operation and the prisoners who lived and died there.

For nearly a decade the SS imprisoned some 200,000 Jews, socialists, Communists, and liberals, among other opponents to the Nazi regime. The punishment cells, gas chambers and burial pits that you will see on this tour can be overwhelming, but your guide will put the site's history into context with expert knowledge about one of the darkest periods of the 20th century.

MODERN GERMAN FOOD- MARKET TOUR, COOKING CLASS & LUNCH (in English)

Explore Germany's rich culinary heritage of seasonal and regional dishes, while learning about herbs, and the century-old tradition of organic gardening in this six-hour tour with a native German cook. Meet in the morning and start your tour by shopping the most famous farmers market in Berlin, the Winterfeldtmarket. Just steps from the market you will arrive at the your guide's (the cook's) home kitchen to prepare and enjoy a typical German lunch dish, made with tasty, seasonal ingredients.

On Thursday we will visit the Wittenbergplatz Market.  Also not far away and a great market which opens later, leading us to create a dinner.

Founder, main host, chef and teacher: Kit Schulte

back up host, chef and teacher: Inés Lauber

for more info, please visit our website: www.schoeneheimat.com

Meet at the main entrance of the St. Matthias Church in the morning and shop for ingredients for a seasonal German dish at Winterfeldmarket until 11 am. Winterfeldtmarket in Schöneberg, located at the Winterfeldtplaza next to the St. Matthias Church, is one of the best farmer's markets in Berlin offering fresh, local organic and regional vegetables, fruits, fish and meats. On Saturdays with around 200 stalls present, you may discover rare ingredients like wild herbs, edible flowers, foraged mushrooms, wild game, as well as handcrafted condiments, household goods and wonderful fresh Turkish delicacies. Your cook will guide you through aspects of German food culture, seasonal customs, and its history of organic farming. On the way to the guide's home you will stop at interesting specialty shops, including chocolate and wine.

At your guide's home kitchen, you will cook a typical three-course menu and discover a healthy and delicious take on German cuisine, with particular emphasis on regional nuances, the culinary influences from Italy and France, and Germany's very special cultivation of herbs and their healing powers. The afternoon culminates as you enjoy a home-cooked meal, served with beer and wine.

Schöneberg, centrally located in former West, is Berlin's most colorful and multicultural district. Many film stars, authors, poets, and scientists have felt at home here – David Bowie and Iggy Pop, Albert Einstein, Hans Fallada, Klaus Kinski, Hildegard Knef, Else Lasker-Schüler, Rudolf Steiner, and Billy Wilder– to name a few. Explore the market and take in all the city has to offer before ending your day with an authentic German feast of your creation.
